Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, located in central Sri Lanka near the town of Rambukkana, is one of the world’s most renowned elephant sanctuaries dedicated to the rescue and care of orphaned and abandoned calves. Established in the 1970s, the facility spans over twenty hectares of lush forest and riverbanks, providing a safe and nurturing environment where healthy herds can roam freely. Daily feeding times draw visitors as jumbo bottles of milk and nutritious supplemental rations are offered by caretakers, giving close-up encounters with baby elephants. Twice a day, the herd is led to the flowing waters of the Maha Oya river where they bathe, splash, and play under the watchful eyes of mahouts. Educational tours inform guests about elephant behavior, conservation challenges, and the orphanage’s breeding program. Through guided feeding sessions and supervised river treks, Pinnawala offers a rare opportunity to witness these gentle giants in a setting that combines animal welfare with public awareness and sustainable tourism initiatives
