Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s two marine national parks, located off the coast of Nilaveli near Trincomalee. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters, the small island supports some of the nation’s healthiest coral reefs, with vibrant hard and soft corals, clownfish, angelfish, and parrotfish flourishing in shallow depths. Snorkel trails marked by buoys guide visitors through underwater gardens, while glass-bottom boat tours offer an alternative for those less inclined to swim. The island’s rocky outcrops provide nesting sites for seabirds such as sooty terns and lesser crested terns. Conservation initiatives focus on coral restoration, reef monitoring, and visitor education to protect fragile ecosystems from warming seas and pollution. Seasonal whale and dolphin sightings occur in offshore waters, and educational signage informs guests about marine ecology. With its combination of pristine underwater scenery and rigorous protection measures, Pigeon Island offers a rare opportunity to witness Sri Lanka’s marine biodiversity in a largely untouched natural setting
